Project Context!

Sproot Studios is a conceptual project that originated from my capstone research. It focuses on the loneliness epidemic and the decline of third spaces, which are essential for building community and personal connections. Initially, the project aimed to enhance library spaces but has since transformed into a solution specifically designed for the Las Vegas art community. Sproot Studios is a welcoming and inclusive third space intended to support emerging artists.

Project Goal!

The goal was to design a space that offers accessible art studios while promoting collaboration and connection among artists. Sproot Studios aims to bridge the gap between traditional third spaces like libraries and the growing need for communal creative hubs. The project also seeks to provide resources for artists without requiring them to have prior industry experience or connections.

My Role:

  • Research and Concept Development
    • Conducted qualitative and quantitative research on third spaces, loneliness, and library usage.
  • Illustration and Branding
    • Designed branding elements, including custom illustrations and visual themes.
  • Art Direction and Design
    • Created the overall aesthetic for the studio spaces, drawing inspiration from existing successful creative spaces like Omega Mart and Area 15.

The Process!

  1. Research:
    • Investigated the role of third spaces in combating loneliness and promoting social well-being.
    • Analyzed local and national data on library usage and third-place evolution.
    • Studied successful communal spaces for inspiration, such as Omega Mart and Container Park
  2. Ideation:
    • Shifted the focus from libraries to art studios to serve the Las Vegas creative community better.
    • Conceptualized Sproot Studios as a hybrid of functional art spaces and an interactive community hub.
  3. Illustration Work:
    • Developed hand-drawn illustrations to visualize the brand identity, emphasizing the vibrant, community-centric nature of the space.
    • The illustrations highlight key elements of the studio, from cozy garage-style units to collaborative areas.
  4. Design Execution:
    • Created mockups of studio layouts, communal areas, and branded merchandise.
    • Printed and self-manufactured prototypes of branded items and other collateral.
